| The following is a first cut at the various positions on the boat during races, and what their responsibilities are. We will modify this as we learn. I will try to add a detailed list of the sequence of events during each maneuver.
Tactics Responsible for overall strategy, as well as tactics on the course. Needs to check tides, current flows, winds, weather forecast, etc. . Learn which boats in the fleet have a clue, and watch them. Watches wind-shifts and calls aheads and behinds, as well as the tacks & gybes.
Mainsail Responsible for shape & trim of the main. Watches helmsman to adjust amount of weatherhelm to be 3-5 degrees. Includes mainsheet, traveler, cunningham (downhaul), vang, halyard, as well as checkstays. Secondary input to backstay (trim is primary control on backstay to adjust headstay tension).
Trim Responsible for sail selection (jib & chute), as well as shape & trim of the headsail & chute. For headsail, includes halyard, sheet tension, fairlead position, as well as primary input to backstay. For spinnaker, includes sheet trim, as well as calling for changes to foreguy, afterguy, and pole adjustments.
Trim #2 Works with trim. Operates the checkstays, foreguy & afterguy. During gybes, handles 2nd spinnaker sheet, etc.. Also responsible for furling the jib after a set.
Grinder Works with Trim and Pitt to grind/trim sheets, guys, and checkstays.
Foredeck Runs the foredeck; responsible for headsail and chute mechanics (raising and dropping sails, packing the chute, setting up the chute for the various types of sets). During starts, takes a bearing on the line and calls distance to the line. Skirts as necessary. Calls lifts and headers.
Mast Manages jib & spinnaker halyards, the topping lift, and inboard end of the pole. Trips the pole.
Pit Tails spinnaker halyard and topping lift. Helps out on the foredeck wherever needed.
Helm Drives. Provides constant feedback to the team in regards to how the helm feels.
